Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair makes his keynote address during the third day of the Labor Party Conference in Brighton October 2, 2001. Blair told the conference that military action against the Taliban regime in Afghanistan is now unavoidable.
``Be in no doubt. Bin Laden and his people organized this atrocity,'' Blair said in a passionate speech. ``The Taliban aid and abet him. We stated the ultimatum. They haven't responded.''
The Taliban say they are sheltering bin Laden in secret locations for his own safety.
Blair said that ``proportionate'' and ``targeted'' action would be taken against bin Laden's network.
As for the Taliban, Blair told delegates in the southern seaside resort of Brighton: ``The aim will be to eliminate their military hardware, cut off their finances, disrupt their supplies, target their troops, not civilians.
``There is no diplomacy with bin Laden or the Taliban regime.''
``We will put a trap around their regime,'' Blair said. ``I say to the Taliban: surrender the terrorists or surrender power. It is your choice.'' |
